Craniosacral Therapy & Somato-Emotional Release

Craniosacral Therapy

My approach to bodywork is anatomically-specific and informed by over 1000 hours of manual therapy training, including numerous advanced trainings approved by the National Board of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork.

Whether you’re looking to alleviate tension/pain, relax, rehabilitate after sustaining an injury, or experience mental/emotional relief from life challenges, Craniosacral Therapy works with your body’s innate healing ability to release what no longer serves you.

My Training

I completed the entire core curriculum in Craniosacral Therapy and Somato-Emotional Release at the esteemed Upledger Institute. I am now a member of the International Association of Healthcare Educators. I went on to complete an advanced course in Somato-Emotional Release, which is a somatic-body centered approach for working through unprocessed emotions, grief, or trauma.

Sessions

Those suffering from TMJ would benefit from mouth work, which may be introduced after the initial session.

For those who are ready for deeper internal work, a sacred and non-judgmental space is held for therapeutic dialogue working with imagery and the unconscious mind to address underlying mental-emotional challenges that might be contributing to dis-ease. This advanced component of CST is called Somato-Emotional Release, detailed further below.

Craniosacral Therapy — Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating, releasing restrictions, and enhancing the functioning of a physiological body system called the craniosacral system - comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. Craniosacral Therapy techniques are varied, but overall they include light touch manual therapy and fascial manipulation, as well as mouth work. The client is fully clothed during session - so this is unlike a typical “massage” and is more therapeutic in nature.

CST has been shown to help a full spectrum of pain and dysfunction, including but not limited to:

  • Migraines and headaches; chronic neck and back pain; TMJ syndrome; stress-related disorders

  • Chronic fatigue; Fibromyalgia; spinal cord injuries; scoliosis

  • Motor-coordination & post-concussion impairments; central nervous system disorders

  • Depression & anxiety; ADD/ADHD; Post-traumatic Stress Disorder

  • Infant and childhood disorders; learning disabilities; orthopedic problems; and many other conditions.

Somato-Emotional Release — Somato-Emotional Release® is a manual therapy process developed by Dr. Upledger that expands on the core principles of Craniosacral Therapy to help rid the body of the residual effects of past trauma and negative emotional experiences. The goal is to facilitate a holistic mind-body approach to the resolution of problems and obstacles related to patient/client progress and growth.

Craniosacral Practitioners observe what shifts are happening for a client during the session, and as appropriate, dialogue is introduced to work with the client’s unconscious holding patterns that may have emotional components. Creative and therapeutic imagery may be utilized to draw on the client’s own inner wisdom and higher self to assist with their own deeper, integrated healing process.

Practitioner training is rooted in an understanding physiological and psycho-emotional mechanisms of disease, as well as psychological concepts. These therapeutic frameworks draw from what Carl Jung called "active imagination," which is a way to bridge the gap between the non-conscious and the conscious. Along with imagery and conversation, active imagination can include dream work and art. This approach to Somato-Emotional Release also combines various Gestalt techniques from Fritz Perls and Roberto Assagioli's Psychosynthesis framework.

"What does it mean to hold space for someone else? It means that we are willing to walk alongside another person in whatever journey they’re on without judging them, making them feel inadequate, trying to fix them, or trying to impact the outcome.

“When we hold space for other people, we open our hearts, offer unconditional support, and let go of judgment and control.

“Holding space is a key part of what we do in Upledger CranioSacral Therapy: being in neutral, supporting the client’s intuition and inner wisdom, creating a safe space – rather than trying to fix, give advice, judge, or even to know."
